Working end splice
The working end is where your rope connects to hardware, anchors, or load points. The splice you choose affects how the rope performs, how easily it can be installed or removed, and how it handles wear over time. This section outlines the available splice types, what they are designed for, and when to use them.
Small Covered Eye Splice
A compact eye splice that buries both the load bearing core and the protective cover of a double-braid marine rope into a neat loop. This low-profile abrasion-resistant splice maintains full breaking strength and UV protection while fitting into tight hardware or small carabiners used on sailboat halyards and control lines. It is ideal for sailing rigging applications that demand a durable clean finish and reliable load performance.
Large Covered Eye Splice
A heavy-duty eye splice that integrates core and cover into a generous loop of 10–15 cm inside length for winch lines, anchor rodes, and mooring lines. The fully buried cover adds maximum abrasion protection and UV resistance while the roomy eye accommodates oversized cleats, allows both girth hitch and cow hitch connections for reusable hardware, and handles repeated friction under load.
Large Eye Splice Without Cover
A core-only loop splice formed by stripping back the cover and burying only the high-tensile core into a large supple eye. This lightweight, flexible splice is perfect for cow hitching onto shackles, bars, or fairleads to reuse existing hardware without re-rigging. It retains nearly full core strength in performance running rigging but should be used where abrasion exposure is limited.
Mousing Eye / Puller Eye
A temporary non-load-rated loop splice created at the rope end to assist in routing or installation of new halyards and wire-core control lines. Sailmakers attach a thin messenger line to this soft loop then pull the main rope through sheaves, conduits, or mast fittings and cut the splice off when done. This quick-rigging mouse eye saves time in setups where a full splice cannot pass.
Whipping
A traditional binding wrap of waxed twine or whipping thread around a rope end to prevent fraying, unlaying, and cover slippage on both natural-fiber and synthetic sailing lines. This finishing technique preserves rope integrity where heat-sealing is impractical and delivers a clean professional appearance. A properly executed whipping provides durable security under load and extends the life of deck lines, sheets, and halyards.
Tested Hardware
Our tested marine hardware provides a secure connection between your rope and hardware fittings, including shackles, snap hooks and quick-release shackles. We use premium components from Wichard, trusted worldwide for high-strength, marine-grade stainless steel and reliable performance under load.
